Who’s in Charge Here?
Do you control your calendar? Or...does your calendar control you?
It's a mixed bag, isn't it?
Many of us NEED our calendars to help streamline and organize our efforts.
They keep us in line and on time. That's a good thing, no?
You and I need our calendars to help keep it all straight.
But as the proverbial saying goes – Calendars are great servants; terrible masters.
It takes a lot to move the needle in today's world - in business, in life, and in our faith walk.
We all need development, collaboration, think, production, relational, and down time (to name a few of our time/energy blocks).
To get it all in, scheduling it via our calendar is the way to go!
I encourage us all to take baby steps toward 1) mastering our calendars, and 2) using them to serve our needs - not the other way around.
Here are a couple suggestions to consider:
- Establish a Personal Core Value for this Arena (mine is centered around a Health priority)
- Macro-view Your Year (we use a "Balance Calendar" tool to get a birds-eye perspective – see below)
- Detail the Current Quarter (I am a big fan of "The 12-Week Year" by Moran & Lennington)
- Establish your "Ideal Week" (in a perfect world...)
- Plan Tomorrow Today (thanks, Dr. Jason Selk!)
- Include Significant White Space (intentional brain pattern interruption)
We are all busy. If we are doing anything worthwhile, chances are our days are full.
But, are they filled with the "right" things?
The stuff that matters?
IMHO, that's worth taking a chunk of time to deeply consider...
Blessings to you, my friends!

This Week’s Resource Recommendation(s):
"The 12 Week Year: Get More Done in 12 Weeks Than Others Do in 12 Months"
– Brian P. Moran
It’s all about focus and intentionality – two of The H3 Leader’s most powerful tools for progress.
From Amazon: Most organizations and individuals work in the context of annual goals and plans; a twelve-month execution cycle. Instead, The 12 Week Year avoids the pitfalls and low productivity of annualized thinking. This book redefines your "year" to be 12 weeks long. In 12 weeks, there just isn't enough time to get complacent, and urgency increases and intensifies. The 12 Week Year creates focus and clarity on what matters most and a sense of urgency to do it now. In the end more of the important stuff gets done and the impact on results is profound.
The Balance Calendar
The 2025 Balance Calendar Template is a relatively simple one-page Excel spreadsheet that encourages The H3 Leader to look at their year from the 30,000-foot level. It is designed to challenge us in the balanced distribution of our priorities (business, life, and faith) over the course of 12 months.
