A Force to Contend With

Gravity. It is a SERIOUS force to contend with. It is constant. It is persistent. It is resistant.

And yet, all of life as we understand it both depends on it and works within its precepts.

It may SEEM like life would be easier without it. We could move with such ease. In fact, we could fly!

But without this constant force pushing against us – and every other tangible object not physically attached to terra firma – every moment of every day, how would life even work?

The force of gravity is absolutely necessary for life as we know it.

There is a particular characteristic of gravity that I find fascinating: It appears to push back harder when we do anything to resist it. The "G-force" increases.

Walking across the room. No problem.

Running across the parking lot.  A lot harder.

When we exert energy against the force of gravity, it pushes back all the more.

A space shuttle sitting idle on the launch pad. No big deal. Not much energy is needed to just sit there.

But the sustained force it requires to push against gravity and propel itself through our atmosphere?

Mind-bogglingly massive.

Moving your business off its spot, its status quo, or its current trajectory, carries with it a similar challenge.

It takes almost nothing to just sit there. And it takes very little to maintain course. Amplified G-forces are not at work.

But leaders know neither of these paths are going to take them where they need to go.

As business leaders, we must accept the reality that progressive movement of any kind includes the struggle to overcome Gravity (and it's close cousin Inertia).

Translation: Change is ALWAYS hard. And the more significant the change, the more significant the push-back.

Rather than complain, or avoid, or even overly-mitigate the reality of this struggle...

...what might it look like to embrace it, to normalize it, to navigate it with confidence because we understand it is the very nature of growth?

In fact, it is absolutely necessary for life as we know it.

Normalizing the struggle can be a powerful tool in our mental toughness tool belt.

Is "it" hard? Yes. But that is to be expected.

Because if we are leading well, we are going somewhere that matters, making the challenging journey worth the constant struggle against Gravity and Inertia.

Blessings to you, my friends!

This Week’s Resource Recommendation:

"Can't Hurt Me: Master Your Mind and Defy the Odds - Clean Edition"
– David Goggins

Ha! I didn’t even know such a thing existed. David’s style is captivating. This book was a true page-turner for me. But… I was struggling with making it a resource recommendation because of his incredibly ‘colorful’ language. Pick the version that makes sense to you, but the link above goes to the “clean version” of his fascinating, almost unbelievable story.

From Amazon: For David Goggins, childhood was a nightmare - poverty, prejudice, and physical abuse colored his days and haunted his nights. But through self-discipline, mental toughness, and hard work, Goggins transformed himself from a depressed, overweight young man with no future into a U.S. Armed Forces icon and one of the world's top endurance athletes. The only man in history to complete elite training as a Navy SEAL, Army Ranger, and Air Force Tactical Air Controller, he went on to set records in numerous endurance events, inspiring Outside magazine to name him The Fittest (Real) Man in America.
