Are You ‘Sending’?

Is yours an intentional ‘sending’ organization?

I recently had lunch with a soon-to-be retired 33-year veteran of a Fortune 100 company. A very rare breed. One of the last of his kind.

In a separate conversation just the day before, I discussed with a small business owner the vibrant, hopeful youth that churn through her doors with relatively short tenure.

Tis the nature of the beast in her industry.

Both scenarios reminded me of the current employment reality that offers those doing the hiring the honor, the privilege, the opportunity…and maybe even the responsibility…of being an intentional sending organization – should they choose to accept it.

In the world of business, profit is essential. This is a hard truth that applies in both for-profit and not-for-profit organizations.

Without positive cash flow, you die. I accept this reality. So should you.

However, if profit is your primary driver – the #1 reason you are in business – then my content and services are likely not for you.

Because over here we see business (and its profits) as a means, a pathway to a brighter, healthier, more abundant future for all involved.

This is the primary driver of business – to make the world a better place.

In the words of our good friend Brian Audia, we believe the purpose of business is to facilitate human flourishing – to the glory of God.

We take raw materials (be they hard goods or knowledge), combine them in a unique way to amplify their worth through an established process (where 1 + 1 > 2), and offer this significantly increased value to the world for a fair price (that includes profit).

We appreciate our product or service’s value and then ‘send it’ into the world, thereby making the world a better place.

What if we took a similar position regarding the workforce granted to us to steward well but for a season?

What if we consciously and intentionally embraced our role as developers of the people entrusted to us – for a purpose that is ultimately bigger than us?

In doing so we would add value not only to our own organization, but by design we would also know we are making a significant contribution to the world beyond our walls.

What would it look like to be an intentional ‘sending’ organization – of leadership and organizational talent?

Like a farmer planting seeds that produce 100-fold returns that in turn feed the community, and ultimately the world, you and I have the honor, privilege, opportunity, and responsibility of providing a healthy, maturing workforce to that same world.

Very few employees, if any, are going to stay in an organization long-term. That ship has sailed.

I contend that if we could expand our vision for their development to include having a significant impact both within and beyond our organizational walls…

Who knows? We just might see that trend start to turn back around.

Whether it does or not, you and I – as purpose-driven, God-honoring leaders in business – can find peace in knowing we have done what we can to build into the maturity of our workforce and leadership ranks in the world of business.

Something we realize is desperately needed, and you and I – should we choose to accept the challenge – get to be a part of it.

Blessings to you all, my friends!

This Week’s Resource Recommendation:

"The Magic of Thinking Big"
– David Schwartz

This book was originally authored in 1959. Even so, it is THE book that launched me into the world that lies beyond our current state of thinking (and consequently, our current state of being). It unlocked a door I didn’t even know existed. Though many have contributed to my journey along the way, this one book stands at the port of entry, and I will be forever grateful for its significant contribution.

From Amazon: Whether your goal is to earn more, lead better, or simply find more confidence and satisfaction in life, this inspiring and actionable guide will show you the way. Motivational expert Dr. David J. Schwartz presents a carefully designed program for getting the most out of your job, your relationships and family life, and your community. He demonstrates that you don’t need to be born into great wealth and intellectual acumen to attain great success and happiness—but you do need to learn and understand the habit of thinking and behaving in ways that will get you there.
